Smiths Beach

The island's most popular surf beach — patrolled in summer, learner-friendly.

A kilometre-long south-west facing surf beach that suits everyone from beginners to advanced surfers, with a gentle sand bottom, consistent swell and rock pools to explore at both ends at low tide. The local surf shop hires boards and wetsuits and runs lessons, and there are toilets, change rooms, outdoor showers, a sealed car park and a general store. The beach is patrolled by Woolamai Surf Lifesaving Club over the summer holidays (27 December to 25 January) — swim between the flags, as rips are common.
